New here and I've pulled something! [21 Aug 2007|11:32pm]

No, I didn't really pull anything! XD Hello everyone! I just joined this community and I'm very excited, because I too am a dancer. I danced, yeah, that's cool, but I hope you would look at my comical look at dance on my journal. I've called it, "I Think I've Pulled Something: A Dancers Tale." I just take a fictional character and put her in our dance shoes. I'm just trying to poke some fun at our lives, because although they are stressful, we can have a little fun, right? Please, give me feedback and become my friend! I would greatly appreciate it! Thanks!

[27 Oct 2006|06:16pm]

Does anybody know any good schools, which have short winter courses 'ballet' and/or ‘musical theatre’, ‘singing’, ‘contemporary dance ’, ‘jazz-modern’, ‘stretching/contortion’ for overseas students? I am interested in all countries. If you know, can you give me some contacts of these schools? Thank you.

new here [15 Aug 2006|01:17pm]

I'm new here to this community.

I took dance for about 12yrs but I had to quit because I had to go in for surgery and also got very sick.
I took tap, jazz, hip hop, modern, ballet and pointe.

It is now 5 years later and I plan on getting back into it slowly.
I plan on starting with taking ballet and jazz.

Was wondering if anyone has any advice on starting again and on how to get my flexibility back.
Also anything else anyone thinks I should know.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

New Here [11 Aug 2006|01:55am]

[ mood | cheerful ]

Hey I'm new here, just thought I should introduce myself...
I've been dancing for 11 years, and I'm proud to say, it is my passion. At 15, I really haven't found anything else in my life that gives me the pure joy and bliss that dancing does. I guess I thought by joining this kind of community, I could meet people who had the same passion other than the girls in my studio.
I'm just finnishing up a dance intensive at a 3 year program called dect. don't really remember what it stands for at the moment, but I'd actually like to ask a few questions about back pain... I don't usually take modern, the normal dance classes I take at my studio are balet, jazz, tap, point, and hip hop. And so ever since we've been doing this modern class this week, its been wicked intense, and I've got some semi-bad pain in my back from all the crazy spirals and releases. Does anyone have any tips there?
And does anyone know any good stretches for your turnout? I've always had a rotten one and I've never figured out how to make it better...

[ mood | grateful ]

Hi well my name is Katie and I have been dancing for about 4 years on and off. My mom is going to put me in dance in the fall and I am way excited for it. How should I get into shape for it. I will probably be trying out at a company that is very successful dance wise. I am up for any advice you can give me! Thanks

Alright, I have a question for you all from a friend of mine, and any answers and/or advice would be very much appreciated:

If you are considering a career path in ballet, how old is 'too old'? How long should you have been dancing for? And we both assume that just lessons at a local dance studio wouldn't be enough, and would a national ballet school be the only option? If you are 15-almost-sixteen, is it too late to be accepted, and are you too far behind? She has had a bit of training as a young child, but hasn't danced in years, although she is in very excellent physical shape. Remember, this is for National Ballet Company style of thing.

Thanks a lot, and I (and she) wish you all tons of luck and rhythm.

[15 Jan 2006|04:49pm]

so i'm here in jacksonville university studying dance.
so far my classes have been pretty good.
ballet is about the same level as when i left my studio on the west coast, The Lisa Clark Dancers.
i really like modern, but i wondering what the overall style is in my jazz class.

hands down, no one does "jazz/lyrical" like Lisa Clark. but i won't complain, and i can't wait to learn different styles.

it's kinda weird, going from a dance teacher teaching competitive dancers and being in the upper level of a competitive studio, to coming here and only being level 3. granted, there are only 4 levels, but still.

but for right now, i'll try to learn as much i can from the east coast, and from Jax. going to just enjoy life here. eventually i'll make my way back to LA and grow even more there.

"she's the best. i knew it. she needs to come back here where she won't be the best and fight her way to the top again. that way she'll grow."

lisa's right. she always is. but i'm not the best.....yet.

;) keep updating on your dance lives, i love reading about it!!

Dance Teacher Help [13 Sep 2005|11:34pm]
Hey, I'm new here. I was hoping to get some advice with one of my dance teachers.

I am not a dancer by any means, but I enjoy dance immensely. Despite my illnesses last year (some very serious ones), I managed to keep up with my dance class. I also took 3 hours (not much, but it was all I could afford) of studio dance. I had taken studio dance previously, but had to quit because of financial/time issues. I started back last year, and decided to enroll in the dance class offered at my school.

Everything went well until December, which is when I became very ill. All of my teachers knew of this, but my dance teacher at school penalized me for my absences. I eventually had to leave my studio because of the health issues, and had to go on a Homebound program in order to complete school. However, because I was enrolled in dance at school, I still had to attend in order to receive a grade for the course.

I told the school dance teacher, to whom I will refer as H, I had been interested in being on her dance team (kind of an unspoken of interest) for a long time, and wanted to audition. I explained this to her, but she never really answered me, just kind of ignored me. One of my friends, who is her minion now, asked her about me, and she told my friend that I could quite easily make her JV team. I auditioned and on application for the team I explained the health situation, and stated that it was no longer an issue, but I had to finish the school year on the Homebound program. My audition was not amazingly fantastic, but I did well enough to make the team. H told me herself that I had scored high enough, but because I was not a freshman I would not be allowed on. She did, however, allow two other girls (both my age) on.

At any rate, I accepted it, and decided it was probably for the best. I took dance at my studio during the summer. Now I am enrolled in two periods of dance at school, but H treats me as though I am a joke.

For example, she asked me why I was in her classroom in between the two dance classes. She did not realize I was in two of her classes… Then, she told me that I would not be allowed to make up any time missed (thus penalizing my grade), no matter what the reason. Excused or unexcused, my grade will suffer. I came in late three times (two were excused). I have missed more of one class than the other, but because more students miss the same class that I missed, she gave me a higher grade than in the other class. More students are on time and present in the other class, so because of statistics, she has given me a lower grade. I’ve dressed out and done all of my work, doing more than required stretching and so forth, but she still gives me a lower grade. I don’t get it.

Then I asked her how I could improve my grand jetés because I cannot seem to straighten my back leg. She said I was ‘slapping’ the floor. I must admit, that I know no other way to get up into the air other than to use the ground. I was a trained gymnast, and that is how I was taught to do jumps/etc.

Then she made me go to the barre and do battements, which I can do to waist level. She did not say much, but walked up to me and said to go into passé, then attitude devant (also waist level). She then chuckled and shook her head, and told me, “This is your problem.” She grabbed my foot (still in attitude devant) and practically shoved it in my face, causing me to lose my balance. Her advice was that because I could not do an attitude devant or an extension to my face, I could not do a grand jeté.

I enjoy dance, but she treats me as though I am a joke. I am not talented, but I do work hard. It is too late to get out of the classes, but I enjoy the flexibility and daily dance I get from the course. How should I deal with her from now until next May?

Thanks for any advice.

Hey everyone! Sorry I haven't posted here in forever.

I just started Hell Week for my high school's dance team. We are 3 days into it and have 3 halftime dances and 3 new sideline routines. I am sooo sore, it's unbelievable. But it's really fun.

I'm a sophomore, but it's my first year on the team ( i did cheerleading last year; big mistake) so I thought I'd be in the back of all the formations because it's primarily by seniority, but because of my height (5'11'') I'm front and center for most formations. The captains are twins who are around my height so I'm always next to them. It's so cool! I'm pumped.

Well that's the update for me. :) Bye!
